ChatGPT, developed by OpenAI, uses the Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4 (GPT-4), while Google BARD relies on its custom Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA).
GPT-4 was trained on an extensive range of internet text. Conversely, LaMDA's training was enriched by a dataset primarily focused on dialogues and conversations. Additionally, BARD's AI model can scour the web in real time, providing up-to-date answers to user questions, while ChatGPT's information is current to 2021.
GPT-4 exhibits a more natural language orientation due to its extensive training in content generation. It offers versatility by performing various text-based tasks, including summarisation and translation. LaMDA's training focused on understanding user intent and contextual nuances, aiming to produce responses resembling human speech and transitioning between subjects.
In a broad range of use cases, ChatGPT currently outperforms BARD, showcasing a more humanlike and intelligent approach to generating text. However, BARD may have the edge on conversational applications. It is essential to note that both are still developing, and their capabilities will continue to evolve over time.
