Committee for Melbourne AI Strategy

The Committee for Melbourne’s report on The future of Artificial Intelligence in Australia, details the extensive economic and social benefits that could be achieved from developing AI, but also highlights the safeguards and regulatory controls that are needed for an equitable, fair and safe ongoing use of AI.

The production of this report was coordinated by Gavin Seewooruttun, Managing Director at Cognis, who led a group of influential organisations, including Allens, Commonwealth Bank, CSIRO’s Data61, EY, Deloitte, Jacobs, Monash University, Nous Group PwC and Telstra.

As commercial interests accelerate the development of digital technology, there are opportunities to leverage AI to improve the

life chances of citizens. The biggest areas of application are in improving people’s health and wellbeing; optimising the allocation of resources, particularly in a crisis; and augmenting people’s capability to deliver essential services. The technology is available now and requires focused and purposeful leadership to translate into operational capability.”

The report primarily aims to reveal the potential economic and societal advantages that could be realized through the development of artificial intelligence (AI) in Victoria. It postulates that AI can provide "revolutionary benefits to both the economy and society". These benefits span across various sectors, including improved healthcare and government services, as well as private sector advantages like enhanced customer experience and back-office efficiency.
